Chapter 10: A Bridge Too Far
Over lunch, Maddie and her friends watched Aunt Dee fuss over Chance. As much as she wanted to be present to support her aunt, Maddie couldnât help glancing around, hoping to catch sight of Darcy and Grace. She had a growing list of questions for them and was starting to wonder if she would ever get a chance to speak to the elusive pair. Her attention was pulled back to her companions when Kris gave her a sharp nudge; she had apparently missed a question from Aunt Dee about her motherâs latest case. Maddie shrugged in response and shook her head discretely when Jamie shot her a questioning glance, indicating she would fill him in later.
Despite desperately hoping for a private moment to talk with her friends about that morningâs events, Maddie found herself trailing after Aunt Dee when she jumped up, shouting, âLook at the time! Come on kids, I have to get Chance over to the agility course to check in.â
The group split up when they reached the demonstration ring. Aunt Dee headed off with Chance to the staging area to get in line and wait for their turn, while Jamie headed up into the bleachers to find a good spot to watch the demonstration. Meanwhile, Maddie and Kris took their places along the perimeter of the ring.
As they settled into place, Maddie took the time to look around at the agility course obstacles. She had glanced at them the night before when they had interrupted Herr Gerhardâs practice session with the Admiral, but she hadnât paid much attention at the time. This was her first chance to get a really good look at the course layout.
The ring was twice the size as the one used for the obedience trials. It was also separated from the bleachers by a temporary fence, although this one looked a little higher and sturdier than the fence used that morning. Along two sides were a series of little jumps, like limbo bars, set just a few inches off the ground. At one end of the ring was a tunnel that looked a giant slinky toy, stretched out in a wide arc and covered with a big cloth sock. In the middle of the ring was an obstacle made out of two wide wooden boards tilted up at forty-five-degree angles, meeting at the top in the middle to create a giant letter A. Near it was a ring that looked like a life preserver from a boat, standing on its side so that dogs could jump through it like a hoop.
Maddie saw a series of twenty tall slender poles set slightly apart in a straight line, which Aunt Dee had called the weaving poles, as well as something that looked like a giant seesaw. Last but not least, Maddie spotted what Aunt Dee had called the dog walk, which had ramps on either side leading up to a long, slender board running about three meters in length and two meters off the ground.
